On Thursday, Jagex released a new update for Old School Runescape (OSRS) players that includes updates for the Kebos Lowlands and a brand new beginner's quest called X Marks the Spot. The quest is free-to-play and aimed novice players who may be working on other quests like the Sheep Shearer and Cook's Assistant. The quest is designed to tie the Kingdom of Kourend to the mainland.

In the quest, a resident of Lumbridge has converted his home into a new pub called the Sheared Ram. By venturing into the pub, players can encounter the Mysterious Veos who is looking for a bold adventurer's help to him hunt for treasure in the Great Kourend kingdom. During the quest, players will be given a variety of different clues that will ultimately lead them to the spot where the treasure can be found.

If you've just started playing OSRS and are having some trouble getting your bearings or finding the treasure in the X Marks the Spot quest, we've put together a complete guide that walks you through every step of the quest. Check it out below.

'OSRS' X Marks the Spot Quest Guide: On Lumbridge Bob, Decoding the Cipher and More

Starting the Quest

The quest begins at Bob's pub in Lumbridge. In order to accept it, you'll need to go into the pub and speak to Veos. You'll have a conversation with him about a treasure scroll he found in the kingdom of Great Kourend. Veos isn't from the area so he's having trouble reading the scroll. At this point you have the option to offer to help him. After doing so, he'll give you the scroll and the quest will begin.

Clue #1 - Bob Lumbridge Treasure Scroll

Upon examining the treasure scroll, you'll discover a clue that will tell you how to proceed with your hunt. The clue is as follows:

"Within the town of Lumbridge lives a man named Bob. He walks out of his door and takes 1 step east, 7 steps north, 5 steps west and 1 step south. Once he arrives, he digs a hole and buries his treasure."

To complete this quest the location start at Bob's Brilliant Axes located in the southern part of Lumbridge. Starting at Bob's door, simply follow the directions to the first dig spot. If you get stuck, a Reddit user has graciously provided an image of where you should be digging, here. Use your spade to dig up the spot and locate the second treasure scroll.

Clue #2 - Lumbridge Castle Treasure Scroll

The second treasure scroll doesn't contain a riddle, but rather a map. If followed correctly, you should find yourself outside the door of the Cook's kitchen at the backside of the Lumbridge Castle. Start digging there and you should find a Mysterious Orb.

Clue #3 - Mysterious Orb Game

To find your next dig location, you'll basically be playing a game of Hot or Cold. To play, simply walk in any direction and then feel the temperature of the Mysterious Orb. If it is warmer, you are on the right track. If it's getting colder, you're headed the wrong way. The game can get a bit tedious so if you want the fast track to where you should be, head to Draynor Village and find the jail. North-west of the jail, near a wheat field, you should find your dig location. A redditor has graciously provided a photo guide for the spot, here. Once you dig up the spot, you should find your third treasure scroll.

Clue #4 - 'ESBZOPS QJH QFO' Cipher Scroll

The fourth and final clue found on the treasure scroll looks like a jumbled mess of letters but it's actually a Caesar Cipher. While there are online tools you can use to decode the cipher, we've gone ahead and unlocked their meaning for you. The decoded phrase is: Draynor Pig Pen. Simply set your sights on the pig pen in Draynor Village. Once you arrive, find Martin the Master Gardener in the middle of the pen. This is where you need to dig. There you'll find an ancient casket. This is the treasure Veos has been looking for, so to complete the quest, you'll need to find Veos and give it to him. Veos is no longer in the pub. Instead, you should look for him at the dock in Draynor village, located near the bank.

X Marks the Spot Rewards

Though Veos is pretty vague about what is inside the casket you gave him, there is a reward for your trouble. Upon completing the quest, players will receive 1 quest point, 200 coins, and an antique lamp that gives 300 XP in the skill of a player's choice.
