101 Free Things at the Everett Public Library — Live in Everett (2024)

You may have heard the news that Americans went to the library more often than the movie theater last year. It’s no wonder because, with tickets and refreshments, there is no way to go to a movie for under $30. At the library everything is free! 👏

Everett has a library system, the Everett Public Library, with two locations. The main library is a beautiful old building located on Hoyt with tall stacks and lots to explore. The smaller Evergreen branch in south Everett is newly remodeled with bright and inviting open space. According to Abigail Cooley, Everett Public Library Director, the main library had 322,352 visitors in 2019 (the Evergreen Branch was closed for remodeling) and there were 327,890 visits to the website.

Here are some of what the Everett Public Library has to offer.

Books

I know, obviously, there are books at the library, but did you know if you want a particular book and the location nearest to you doesn’t have it, you can request online for it to be delivered to your branch? If there is a book or magazine the library doesn’t carry, ask and they may be able to order it for you.

There is a huge selection of e-books and audiobooks available using the Libby app. Libby is so easy to use, just log in with your library account and download your selection to your e-device of choice. I like to filter on “available now” and have never been disappointed by what is available to me.

Book Recommendations for Kids

I once asked for help finding books for my son when he was starting to read chapter books and had three enthusiastic librarians ready to help. That's good customer service! You can also find some great kid’s book recommendation lists on the library website.

Movies

There is a pretty good selection of DVDs at the library, but do you know about Kanopy? It is an impressively curated, on-demand streaming video service that provides educational and award-winning documentaries. There’s also Hoopla, where you can stream not only movies but TV shows and music.

Events and Classes

The library hosts computer classes, author talks, kids storytimes and movie viewings, the list goes on. Check out their calendar to see what might interest you.

History Research

Librarians are trained professionals and they want to help you, so ask. If you are at the main branch on Hoyt, stop in the Northwest Room for some PNW history research. You might find Live in Everett contributor Richard Porter doing research there.

Computers

You can reserve a computer to use for internet access and all library cardholders receive $0.50 in printing credit per day.

Training

Online training courses with everything from Excel to project management and programming can be found on Lynda.com. Before you pay for a class, log in with your library card and check to see if you can get something for free.

Book a Librarian

If you need help researching a topic, figuring out how to use the computer or downloading an e-book to your electronic device, you can make a 30-minute or 1-hour appointment with a librarian. Call the Main Library Reference Desk (425-257-8000) to book your appointment.
